Hope, Healing, and Freedom is the newest resource from Pure Desires Ministries and is a fantastic introduction to a pathway of freedom for anyone who finds themselves struggling with unwanted, compulsive sexual behaviors. Co-authors Nick Stumbo and Ashley Jameson have packed an impressive amount of personal stories, brain science, statistics, and simple, practical steps in this short, very readable book. It is an extremely approachable onramp to the wide array of well-established principles of recovery exemplified by PDMI’s Biblically-based and clinically-informed approach to helping men and women be free from unwanted sexual behavior.
I was impressed by how effortlessly they wove personal stories (their own as well as testimonies from those helped by engaging with Pure Desire resources) alongside easy-to-understand brain science as well as statistics from the latest study on pornography use by the Barna Group (which PDMI sponsored) called Beyond the Porn Phenomenon. The same way that pornography use and other compulsive sexual behaviors can totally consume someone’s life, the path for healing outlined is a full-court press that seeks to bring hope and healing to every aspect of a struggler’s life. The book itself is written that way, appealing to the head, the heart, and everything in between.
I highly recommend it to those who are curious what the path to freedom from compulsive sexual behaviors anywhere from pornography use to solicitation of sexual services. It’s great for leaders who have had their people approach them in a desperate attempt to find some measure of relief from the guilt that plagues them. It’s also great for those who are maybe just curious, wondering if they may actually have a problem on their hands. Even if you don’t, any instances of these behaviors may be worth investigating and this book is an excellent way to do so.
I received early access to this book from my participation at the Pure Desire Summit where they did the soft launch of the book. I’m not employed by PDMI nor compensated for a review.
