Integrating Spirituality & Psychology

By Pure Desire Team

Emotional Health / Healing / Recovery

Recovery is not just about overcoming unwanted behaviors—it’s about healing both the mind and the soul. Since this is such an important part of the healing journey, we explored the profound connection between spirituality and psychology with insights from Dr. Craig Cashwell. This integration forms a cornerstone for holistic healing, especially for individuals in the early stages of recovery from compulsive sexual behavior and healing from betrayal trauma.

Dr. Craig Cashwell emphasizes that his passion for integrating spirituality with psychological counseling has been a lifelong journey. With over 28 years of experience in training counselors and a part-time private practice, Dr. Cashwell’s work centers around understanding the depths of human struggle through a spiritual lens. He discusses his work with the International Institute for Trauma & Addictions Professionals (IITAP) and his significant contributions to Shadows of the Cross—a book that adds a spiritual dimension to the workbook, Facing the Shadows.

The Philosophy of “Both and”

A central theme in Dr. Cashwell’s approach is the philosophy of “both and” rather than “either or.” This perspective recognizes that psychological health and spiritual well-being are not mutually exclusive but are interconnected pieces of the human experience. In our discussion, Dr. Cashwell reflects on his near choice to enter the ministry, the impact of his personal faith journey, and how these have informed his counseling practice.

During our conversation, Dr. Cashwell shares a profound perspective:

Nothing that is psychologically damaging is theologically sound.

This powerful statement opens up a conversation about how psychological principles and spiritual teachings must align to foster genuine healing. He highlights the teachings of Jesus—particularly the emphasis on grace over shame—as psychologically profound and spiritually enriching.

Trauma and the Body’s Response

The conversation also delves into how trauma is stored and processed in the body, referencing Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score. Dr. Cashwell explains the importance of a trauma-informed approach to both addiction recovery and healing from betrayal trauma, which acknowledges the physical and emotional responses embedded in our nervous systems.

A key concept discussed is the Window of Tolerance, a model developed by Dr. Dan Siegel. Understanding one’s Window of Tolerance is crucial in managing responses to triggers and maintaining emotional regulation. Dr. Cashwell discusses practical steps for individuals to recognize when they are outside this window and strategies to return to a state of balance.

Embracing Spiritual Directives in Healing

In the latter part of our discussion, Dr. Cashwell touches on the integration of spiritual practices in healing. He emphasizes the power of prayer and meditation in expanding the Window of Tolerance and fostering deeper self-reflection and connection with the Divine.

Dr. Craig Cashwell’s insights not only deepen our understanding of the integration between psychology and spirituality but also offer practical guidance for individuals navigating the complexities of recovery and healing. His holistic approach serves as a reminder that healing is a journey that encompasses mind, body, and spirit.

Incorporating these insights into recovery programs can significantly enhance the support provided to those grappling with the dual challenges of unwanted sexual behavior and betrayal trauma, paving the way for a balanced and sustained recovery.
